Hello, I'm considering returning to school to pursue a PhD. I'm not sure if I'm able to purchase Comsol through the university.
If I am able to do so, does the software allow me import any files created by the student license, to later be used in industry as examples to refer to?
Are there compatibility issues if the student license is a more recent version, say taking a project I generated on a 5.4 license and using on a 5.3 license?

determination of the refractive index from S matrix for a metamaterial unit cell
Hi all, I'm trying to the determine the effective refractive index for a metamaterial unit cell. For this case, the cell is oriented parallel to the propagation direction (k) as show in the references below. Unfortunately, I'm not being able to reproduce the results and I dont know why. Does anybody has any experience with this?
Im attaching a model that tries to reproduce the results from Fig. 3 in [1]. The model uses the wave optics module, but it can be also easily done using RF module.

I am trying to make a surface plot of the first strain invariant

I am trying to make a surface plot of the first strain invariant in my model.
In the solid mechanics module, I don't seem to have access to it. However I have seen documentation which states that the first strain invariant is a variable I can use in post processing. It is listed as a solid application mode variable, but I can't find it on the model tree anywhere.

Select the surface as domain in physics.
Hello everyone, I created in workplane the plane geometry from parameters (which I've measured before from real object). Next I revolved it to create 3D Object. Now, I am trying to select my new object as a domain in physic but Comsol doesn't see my surface. It is any possible to select surface as domain for example "Ground" in electrostatics physic?
Can anyone help me in this regard? It will be a great help for me.

Induction Heating Multiphysics & Thermal Expansion / Stress - Is This Possible?
I know Comsol can be used to simulate induction heating of a metal, but can I also simulate the thermal expansion and stresses as the metal heats up via a frequency-transient study? I would also be simulating convection and radiation in addition to heat conduction during this process. If the frequency-transiet study is not the correct study which should I use?
Also, can I save the thermally expanded geometry and apply a second study to the expanded geometry, or can I import the expanded geometry into another model to be remeshed for a different study?

Arnoldi iterations error
Hi,
I am running a photonic crystal simulation in COMSOL. The goal of the simulation is to find the eigen frequencies at different possible K vector (vector defining the floquet periodicity in my structure). The simulation sweeps K from 0 to 1 but I get this error "that maximum number of arnoldi iterations are reached, Increase the dimenison of Krylov subspace. Not all eigen frequencies are returned" and it doesnot proceed until K=1 calculation and stops at K=0.97. Can someone help me understand why this error occurs and how to resolve it?

Surface plot in livelink in Matlab
Please, find my attached model and its matlab code. I imported text data (comcom.txt) as a table into Comsol. I did the surface plot in comsol. Then I generated the matlab code and try to get the surface plot in matlab using matlab livelink. Although it is not showing error, but it is not plotting, despite I used mphplot. Issues at connecting one coarser mesh and an extremely thin mesh
Hi everyone,
Here is my problem, I got a really thin (1mm) frame (and 1.5mx0.5m) inside a big box (2mx2mx1m) and I want to have an extremelly fine mesh in the frame and a coarser one outside. Inside the frame I want exactly 10 layers of prisms, the thickness of each layer is therefore 0.1mm. Please look at the fille attached !
I first tried to use a surface mesh (free triangular mesh) on one face of the frame and swept it through the frame with a distribution of 10 layers, the remaining domains were meshed using free tetrahedral with a coarser mesh. But unfortunately I had some many errors saying that the boundaries of the two meshes couldn't be connected or that there was an error in the meshing domain...
Then I did exactly the same thing but using the boundary layer feature on the frame with 10 layers of 0.1mm and the boundaries being only one face (I also did 5 layers with the two faces) and I got the same kind of error.
Initially I wanted to mesh so thin in the frame to observe the skin effect (I'm working at 85kHz with conducitivites up to 10^7 S/m)...
Does anyone know how to do this ?

ideas for continuous drying of polymer dispersion.
Hi, I'm trying to simulate a drying process of a continues carrier wetted with a polymer dispersion that is being dried with convective heating. (like a painted surface that is being dried)
I'd like to only have one or two nozzles in the simulation, so only a small section of the drying 'tunnel'. I'm struggling with the continuous feed however. Does someone have an idea how I could implement a solid carrier that moves though the reference frame?
